Lutein
A Carotenoid Naturally Associated With the Macula
Lutein is a naturally occurring xanthophyll carotenoid found in the human body and concentrated in the retina, particularly within the macular region.
Together with zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin, lutein contributes to the macular pigment — a naturally occurring pigment within the central retina.
Because of its presence in the eye, lutein has been extensively studied in relation to visual function, macular pigment, and retinal health.
